“For everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.” 1 John 5:4
Did you know that the Greek goddess of victory was Nike, which also happens to be the name of a United States aerial missile. They’re both named for the Greek word Nike (NEE-kay) which simply means victory. The next time you strap up your athletic shoes for the sports event you’re playing, keep that in mind!
As Christian’s living in this world, I am reminded of what Jesus said as we live in this world and face the many obstacles that sometimes can seem impossible to avoid let alone grab this victory promised here in this passage today. Jesus said; “You are in this world but you are not of this world.” All the “victories” that the world enjoys are passing, this year’s championship team will become next years target. At best it is a temporary and fleeting memory of what was….in that day of victory. We are beset with rather formidable obstacles. I’m sure each of you reading today, may be facing or will be facing a formidable obstacle. The dictionary defines the word formidable as:
- Causing Fear, apprehension, or dread, threatening, menacing, fearful, frightful.
- When we are facing these from the world’s point of view they can seem just like this.
But, if we are “born of God, meaning God lives within me, it is a victory waiting to be had. “For whatever is born of God overcomes the world”. 1 John 5:4
If the old nature is in control of us, we began to see things as they appear to be, and not as they are, from God’s perspective, that He has equipped us to have victory in everything we face. This world appeals to that Old Nature and tries to make God’s plan seem burdensome and as a result we may lose heart.
“For everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.”
The word overcome is a favorite of John’s, he uses it in 1 John 2:13-14 with reference to overcoming the devil. Because we have been born again, we are overcomers.
There is a story I found interesting where there was soldier in the army of Alexander the Great who was not acting bravely in the heat of the battle. When he should have been pressing ahead, he was lingering behind. Alexander, the great general approached him and asked him, “Soldier, what is your name?” The soldier replied, “My name, sir, is Alexander.” The General looked him straight in the eye and said firmly: “Soldier, get in there and fight or change your name!”
What is our name? “Children of God” Alexander the Great wanted his name to be a symbol of courage…..our name carries with it the assurance of victory. To be born of God means, to share God’s victory, a victory of faith, a faith in Jesus Christ, the Son of God! A faith not in ourselves, but a faith anchored in Jesus Christ, that is what gives us the victory. “In this world ye shall have tribulation, but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world”
“For everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.”
Maybe today your facing many obstacles and challenges, maybe they appear to be formidable making you to see by sight and not by faith. Maybe you’re living in apprehension, facing a menacing, fearful and frightful situation. Take to heart this scripture today. EVERYONE that counts themselves BORN OF GOD, already has the victory Jesus Has given us as an inheritance because of who we are in Christ. We can face our obstacles as faith extenders, an opportunity to claim the victory over the situation and through Him become overcomer’s .
I too, have been facing a formidable obstacle that isn’t going to move until God has completed what He has designed for me. Yes, my faith has been challenged, but I need to remember that as a Child of God, I am an Overcomer. Help me Lord to be as Paul as he wrote; “None of these things moved me.” I resolve each day to walk in that victory right along side of my victory, Jesus Christ. Your faith is being formed, and reinforced as you walk in this world, but remember, it’s all one big Victory Parade! Smile and wave guys, we’re all going to heaven, as children of God.
